Beyond Engineering

A little about meaway from the keyboard.

Technology is an important part of my life, but I also enjoy travelling, dancing, wildlife, sea fishing, retro gaming and most importantly spending time with my wife.

Many of the projects in this portfolio began through curiosity, and that same curiosity shapes the interests I enjoy outside work.

The Person Behind the Projects

Curiosity does not stop at technology.

Engineering and technology have been a major part of my career, but maintaining interests away from work helps me remain motivated, creative and open to new ideas.

I enjoy activities that involve learning, shared experiences and exploring different environments. Some are closely connected to technology, while others provide an opportunity to switch off from it completely.

Together, these interests provide a more complete picture of the person behind the technical projects and professional experience presented throughout this portfolio.

Interests and Hobbies

Learning, travelling and enjoying time outdoors.

01

Salsa and Modern Jive

Dancing is one of my favourite interests and something my wife and I enjoy together.

My wife and I regularly enjoy both Salsa and Modern Jive. Dancing provides a great balance of learning, exercise, music and meeting new people.

One of our most memorable experiences was travelling to Cuba to learn Salsa. Experiencing the music, culture and local teaching styles first-hand gave us a much deeper appreciation of the dance.

Dancing also reinforces qualities that are valuable in professional life, including communication, trust, adaptability and working together towards a shared outcome.

02

Wildlife and BirdNET

A simple question about the birds in our garden became one of my favourite engineering projects.

My wife wanted to know which birds were visiting our garden, including those that we could hear but did not always manage to see.

That question led me to build a BirdNET-Go monitoring system using Linux, Docker, a USB condenser microphone, machine learning, Prometheus and Grafana.

The project combines an interest in wildlife with practical engineering and gives us a new way to notice and enjoy the birds around our home.

03

Sea Fishing

Sea fishing gives me a chance to switch off from technology and spend time outdoors.

I enjoy sea fishing whenever I have the opportunity, particularly while travelling or spending time near the coast.

Fishing rewards patience, preparation and observation. Tides, weather, location and equipment all influence the approach, and conditions can change quickly.

Whether fishing from the shore, a harbour wall or a boat, I enjoy the challenge and the opportunity to relax outdoors as much as the catch itself.

04

Retro Gaming

Classic games and computers reflect my long-standing interest in technology and creative engineering.

I have always enjoyed retro gaming and appreciate the creativity behind classic games, computers and consoles.

It is fascinating to see what developers achieved with limited processing power, memory and storage, often through clever programming and efficient use of resources.

Revisiting classic titles is relaxing, but it also provides an interesting reminder of how computing has developed over the years.

05

Travel

Travel provides time to explore different places, cultures and ways of life.

My wife and I enjoy travelling, particularly visiting Spain and exploring coastal towns, local communities and different landscapes.

One of the most memorable trips was spending four weeks in the rainforest of Costa Rica. It was a completely different environment from everyday life and gave me the chance to experience the wildlife, climate and landscape at close range.

Our visit to Cuba was especially memorable because it combined travel, music, culture and our shared interest in Salsa.

Travel gives me the opportunity to step away from everyday routines, recharge and return with a fresh perspective.

06

Lifelong Learning

Curiosity connects many of my professional and personal interests.

Technology changes constantly, so I dedicate time outside work to developing new skills through practical projects.

My Engineering Lab allows me to experiment with Linux, Docker, Kubernetes, cloud platforms, monitoring, security and automation.

Whether I am learning a new technology, practising a dance step or investigating wildlife in the garden, I enjoy understanding how things work and continually improving.

A Memorable Experience

Travelling to Cuba to learn Salsa.

One of the highlights of our interest in dancing was visiting Cuba and learning Salsa within the culture and musical environment closely associated with the dance.

Learning from local teachers, experiencing live music and seeing the role dance plays in everyday life gave us a much deeper appreciation of Salsa than we could have gained from lessons at home alone.

It was a memorable shared experience that combined travel, learning, music and culture.

Rainforest Experience

Four weeks in the Costa Rican rainforest.

Spending four weeks in the rainforest of Costa Rica was one of the most memorable travel experiences of my life.

Living close to the rainforest environment gave me the opportunity to experience its wildlife, sounds, weather and landscape in a way that would not have been possible during a short visit.

It strengthened my interest in wildlife and the natural world, and it remains one of the experiences I remember most vividly.

What Connects These Interests

Curiosity, learning and shared experiences.

01

Curiosity

I enjoy asking questions, exploring ideas and understanding how things work.

02

Shared experiences

Many of my favourite interests are activities I enjoy with my wife, family and friends.

03

Balance

Outdoor interests, music and travel provide a healthy balance to technical work.

04

Continuous learning

I value opportunities to improve, whether professionally or personally.

Where Interests Meet Engineering

From garden birds to a monitored machine-learning workload.

The BirdNET project is a good example of how my personal and technical interests sometimes overlap.

What began with my wife asking which birds visit our garden developed into a working Linux and Docker platform using a USB microphone, audio processing, machine learning, Prometheus metrics and Grafana dashboards.

It remains a light-hearted family project, but it also demonstrates how a genuine user need can lead to research, design, implementation and continual improvement.
