Linux & Systems Administration

More than 20 years of commercial UNIX and Linux experience.

Supporting business-critical infrastructure across Red Hat Linux, AIX and Solaris, from day-to-day production operations and incident resolution through major migrations, automation, monitoring and recovery.

Production Operations

Enterprise systems support

Long-standing experience providing BAU support for UNIX and Linux systems in 24/7 enterprise environments, including out-of-hours support and on-call activity for business-critical services. Responsibilities have included incident and problem resolution, senior technical escalation, service restoration to SLA, performance investigation, patching, upgrades and controlled operational change.

Platforms

Red Hat, AIX and Solaris

Commercial experience includes Red Hat Enterprise Linux, IBM AIX and Solaris, with work spanning RHEL 4/5/6/7, AIX LPAR administration, Red Hat on VMware, Solaris-to-IBM AIX P-series migrations and enterprise UNIX infrastructure support.

Automation

Patching and repeatable operations

Automated Red Hat Linux patching using Bash before moving the process to Ansible, improving consistency, repeatability and operational control while reducing reliance on manual administration.

Migration & Change

Complex infrastructure change

Experience includes Solaris-to-AIX migrations, Red Hat upgrades, service transitions and technical leadership for a major enterprise data-centre migration, supported by formal change control, validation, rollback planning and operational handover.

Monitoring & Platforms

Operational visibility and application infrastructure

Supported application and middleware infrastructure across UNIX and Linux environments, including LAMP platforms, IBM Content Manager, DB2 and associated enterprise services, combining operating-system administration with the applications and dependencies running on it.

Resilience

Backup, recovery and disaster recovery

Practical experience of backup and recovery, disaster recovery testing and high-availability environments, including validating that systems and services could be recovered when required. This developed into later responsibility for technical business continuity, recovery planning and coordinated disaster recovery exercises.

Current Engineering

Keeping established systems skills current.

Alongside commercial experience, I continue to administer Linux systems through my engineering environment, using automation, monitoring, security tooling, virtualisation and documented infrastructure change.
